Cyberfairy June :: Original Design
Inspiration
I have an overflowing pile of leftover fabric and fabric bought for costumes that never happened. Also, I don’t think any female cosplayer’s inventory is complete without a fairy costume! I’m not into fairies, so I couldn’t justify spending that much money on a fairy costume. The ethereal, medieval nature of fairies kind of bores me, so of course I used obnoxious bright colors and vinyl. I guess my choice of materials makes her more cyber-inspired. It was my goal to spend nothing on this costume. The only thing I ended up purchasing was the gold bias tape around the edge of the pink skirt. So I guess I failed.
Construction
For the corset, I modified Simplicity pattern #5006. I made the rest of the patterns myself. For the black skirt petals, I layered a piece of transparent metallic fabric between 2 layers of black/yellow vinyl. I stitched the butterfly-esque design, then carefully cut out the relief patterns on both the black and yellow vinyl to reveal the metallic fabric inbetween. I stuck 18 gauge wire in them to make them curl up.
The wings are 6 wire coathangers from my closet. The 3 colors of the wing fabric are from the same yard of gradient-dyed fabric I had laying around. I gradient-dyed the wig from its original sickly greenish neon yellow (on the top) to an orangey-yellow to make it match the outfit more. I sewed in some pink extensions I had laying around to complete the look.
