Key :: Key the Metal Idol
This show is about a robotic girl who must make 30,000 friends in order for her to turn human. She figures the fastest way to achieve her goal is to become a popstar like her idol, Miho. Kind of a hard task for a shy, quirky girl who creeps everyone out by referring to herself in the third person all the time. But you know, a lot of rappers refer to themselves in the third person. So maybe she has a shot.
Inspiration
I used to collect this series on VHS in highschool. Yeah. I’m old. Too old to cosplay teenage robots, but also too old to care. I have the soundtrack and still listen to it regularly. It’s just one of those series that will always be dear to me, and also one that unfortunately I can’t nerd out talking about because not that many people remember it.
Construction
I found a perfect grey wig on ebay and styled it. It’s so adorable that I want to smile but I can’t because Key has no emotions! I used this costume as an excuse to get some purple contacts. They’re neat. I wish I had purple unfeeling robot eyes for real. For the dress I used Butterick pattern 5189. I added the collar and cuffs, and altered the dress to fit more closely. I had a hard time choosing the color because the dress changes colors like every minute. I chose purple instead of blue because I really hate that powder blue color. I made her red bag so I can carry all my belongings in style!
