Rose Red :: Original Design
Inspiration
Inspired by the Grimm’s Fairy Tale of Snow White and Rose Red. It’s very different than the more well-known story of Snow White, so look it up! I experienced this story first through an old Miyazaki short on public TV when I was a child, and brought it up to a friend to cosplay one day.
Construction
I designed the outfits, taking care to make them convertable from skirts by day to cute bloomers/ bear accessories for a fun look, to allude to the bear in the original story. Sadly, the bear ears and tails were never worn. I based the design loosely on traditional German garb… perhaps that detail got lost in the final execution though. But the thought was there! The front panel of each corset is an original design painting featuring different scenes of the fairy tale, and is framed in gold pleather. I wanted a fun, cute youthful look instead of something old-fashioned and elegant, although the velvet makes it look rich and extravagant! This was a joint effort for the studio I used to work for. I constructed our wigs, hand-sewed all of our flower details, and painted the detailed front panels. So cute!
