Shayla Shayla :: El Hazard: The Magnificent World
Inspiration
I saw El Hazard fansubbed on laserdisc when I was 15. Laserdisc, people! Who remembers those? My favorite color is red. I am always drawn to redheadded characters. They usually have fiery personalities that I envy. (Shayla included!) Maybe it’s an opposites attract thing, because I am actually pretty easy to get along with and hate to cause a stir. I wish I could be more gutsy and spontaneous sometimes. So I get to be fiesty vicariously through cosplaying redheads, haha.
Construction
I traced a dress I own for the basic pattern. Drafting the sleeves and giant shoulders was a pain. If only they still sold 80′s power suit patterns. I learned the hard way: don’t mix pleather and cotton on a dress. Ironing nightmare. Her leg pouch is functional, so that’s where I keep my wallet at cons. The headpiece and neckpiece have a base of Wonderflex that I attached stretch pleather to.
I was going to cast the various orbs on her costume, but ran short on time. I ended up using christmas ornaments. I sculpted the forehead and ankle orbs because of their oblong shape. The neck orb is a ladle from the dollar store with the handle hacked off.
The wig was fun to style. I love styling spiky wigs. I use cheap Rave megahold hairspray ($2 a can!) and a hairdryer set on low. It ends up with about 15 coats of hairspray by the end.
